This book lived up to the hype for me and exceeded my expectations. It was the perfect book to celebrate spooky season. From the beginning of the story this sense of dread and foreboding starts and doesn’t let up til the end. The pacing was immaculate. And I felt all the thrills, chills, and spooks. Grann’s ability to write about historical events in a captivating and engaging way allows you to immerse yourself in these events and become invested in the outcome. The revelations about human nature under extreme trial and the psychological changes that occur when basic needs are threatened such as food, water and shelter. How easy it can be to slip into a savage and barbaric mindset. How an empire’s lustful desire for power launched a wild campaign that ended in little victory.
